Panoramic scenes from the city of Frankfurt adorn this stein. On the front the Rhine River is pictured with a tour boat and the city in the background. One side shows the Alte Nikolaikirche (Old St. Nicholas Church) which was built in the 13th century as the court chapel for emperors of the Holy Roman Empire and the Roman section which is the old city of Frankfurt. The Paulskirche (St. Paul’s church) is on the other side. It was originally a Lutheran church but in 1849 it had become the seat of the Frankfurt Parliament, the first publicly and freely-elected German legislative body. After WWll it was destroyed but as a tribute to its symbolism of freedom and as the cradle of Germany, it was the first structure in Frankfurt the city rebuilt after the war. Also shown is the Old Opera house.
